WESTCHESTER - Nate Robinson has stopped Tootsee Rolling. The last maintenance worker's broom has been holstered. The gym lights at SUNY Purchase have long since been turned out.
In the cover of night the son of a legend works on his jumpshot--alone and in the dark.
"I used to bring one of those big yellow flashlights," said the mystery baller widely believed to be Patrick Ewing, jr. "I'd just stand it up to have just enough light to look around. The campus police always would come by... I'd barely make it out of some close ones."
While insiders speculate that the Knicks will sign Ewing as soon as a roster spot becomes available, he's not allowed to travel with the team nor is he entitled to team facilities, services, meals or strip club discounts.
"I'd normally go to the strip club with Zach [Randolph]," the Georgetown standout admitted. "Now that he's gone, I'm gonna have to see if I can use Peep's [Anthony Roberson] pass when he's working. Gotta check out the lunch shift, C-section chicks for now."
Fully aware that he has to pay dues in the NBA, Junior longs for the day he can share in his father's Knick legacy. "I want some of them City Dancers when I get to the big show," he added with a smile eerily reminiscent of the sweat-drenched grin worn by the warrior from whence he came.
For now, the son of the orange and blue's favorite son waits his turn like the rest of the D-League fodder. Until Purchase security can catch up with him, he'll continue to do so nocturnally.
