I didn't think it was possible. I never thought it could happen. No New York Knick fan could see this on the horizon. But my dream finaly came to fruition.
Yes, that's right.
The New York Knickerbockers will be under the salary cap at the end of the 2009-2010 NBA basketball season.
You read that right.
After years of accumulating terrible contracts like Glen Rice, Travis Knight, Steve Francis, Allan Houston, Penny Hardaway, etc., Donnie Walsh decided it was time to end the tradition of shooting yourself in the foot. Or as Isiah would like to call it, "Acquiring assets". Fans would call Isiah a lot of things that would not be appropriate for a PG-13 audience. I would do many things to Isiah that would not be appropriate for a rated R audience.
So Donnie Walsh traded Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford (both of their contracts expire in 2011) for Al Harrington, Cuttino Mobley, and Tim Thomas (all of their contracts expire in a year and a half), the Knicks can see the daylight. The Knicks are expected to have a little over 30 million in cap room for the Summer of 2010. To put that in perspective, the Knicks can most probably sign 2 max contract basketball players during that summer.
Roll out the red carpet for Lebron and Chris Bosh. You know what? Maybe red carpet isn't good enough. Flower petals need to be thrown out on to the ground to precede their steps. Send silk, the finest wine, and the greatest food NYC has to offer to Bosh and Lebron before 2010. Just to let them know what they missing. Give them free entry into Scores. Show them a lineup of supermodels and video hos. Lebron needs to be handed season tickets to Yankees games. Walsh will negotiate with Spielberg to have Bosh casted as "Velociraptor #3" in the next Jurassic Park movie. Whatever happens, we can't allow James Dolan to send CDs of his music to either of them. That can turn anyone away from the World's Greatest Arena. All evidence of such music needs to be burned and stricken from the proverbial record. They never existed.
However, the Knicks aren't spiritually free of albatrosses like Stephon Marbury and Eddy Curry. Sure, Walsh doesn't have to trade them in order to get under the cap. However, nothing is more depressing then reading about Steph not wanting to play in ball games even though the team is shorthanded or Curry not even meeting with the trainer to get into shape because he knows he will not play. This is not what the Knicks need in the atmosphere.
Oh well, look at the bright side.
Knicks fans have a reason for hope.
